Capturing the urban absurdity and threads of identity that connect humanity, Bouie Choi navigates between Eastern and Western approaches through wooden paintings with delicate brushwork, splashes, and flowing pigments. From her community and heritage preservation experience from 2013-2019, Choi has familiarised herself with wood, imbuing the material with her state of mind and layered temporalities through repetitive preserving, pouring, sanding and washing. The visual traces accumulated in the painting are created by removing processes that document the passage of urban time and perishing impressions of a city. Choi's landscapes often remind us of humanity's insignificance through juxtaposing the visible and invisible, artificial and natural, scattered and gathered, micro and macro beings. If a painting manifests infinite borrowed space and time, Choi attempts to negotiate the liminal space between the tangible and intangible, describable and indescribable realities, bringing a glimmer of hope with the evocative power of urban imagery.

Choi holds a BA in Fine Art from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2009), and an MA in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of London (2012).
