Bouie choi 蔡鈺娟

Bouie Choi employs wood as a spatiotemporal medium, with a practice consistently centered on the quiet observation of “fragile existence.” While her earlier works distilled collective memory and urban imprints through repetitive processes of preserving, pouring, sanding, and washing, her recent practice has shifted from cityscapes toward more intuitive and introspective visual narratives. By allowing the natural grain and fluid color washes to guide her imagination – an artistic process of ‘deferred definition’ which is about the moment of seeing—choosing not to define an object, a form in haste, but staying within that gaze until its social layers, its physical essence, and my own inner experience and undefined reality begin to resonate together. From there she captures sensory vignettes woven from fragments of biography, dreams, and everyday life. In the unique climatic context of Hong Kong, Choi explores a “poetic texture of humidity,” treating moisture as a solvent for memory. This approach allows pigments to permeate and breathe within the wood grain, reflecting her unwavering focus on the human condition—navigating the delicate balance between unrest and solace.

She holds a BA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2009) and MA from Chelsea College of Arts, London (2012). Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Those warm and unwavering existences’ (2026), solo exhibition in Basel Switzerland (2023), and in Grotto Fine Art Hong Kong (2023). Recent group shows include ‘Hybrid Nature’ in Alisan Fine Arts New York (2025) , ‘Three Tired Tigers’ in Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai (2024-25), and Stanford University (2024). Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
